Guess the Language Quiz
Can you get 10 out of 10?
Guess the language from a short phrase, then send the same questions to a friend. Who can get more right?
How many can you recognize?
Choose from four languages for each of the ten phrases. There’s no timer, so take as long as you like.
After each guess, see the translation and a clue that helps explain the answer.
Read the phrase and choose its language. Turn on JavaScript to play the interactive quiz, or try the practice examples below.
Just for fun. This quiz tests language recognition, not fluency.
How to play the guess the language quiz
Read & recognize
Look at a short phrase in its original writing system. Choose from four language names. You don’t need to speak the language to spot a clue.
Find the giveaway
After each answer, discover what the phrase means and which letters or words helped identify it. A hint is available if you get stuck.
Settle the debate
Share your score and send the same round to a friend, or pass one phone between two players in Family face-off.
How can you identify a language from text?
Start with the writing system, then look more closely at spelling, punctuation, and familiar words. A single character can narrow your choices, but it rarely tells the whole story.
Japanese can mix kanji and kana. Korean uses Hangul syllable blocks. Spanish may give itself away with an opening ¿ or ¡. In other rounds, you’ll need to compare words within a shared alphabet.
Don’t let a shared script fool you
Russian and Ukrainian both use Cyrillic. Arabic, Persian, and Urdu use related writing systems. Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese all use Latin-based alphabets.
Written Chinese also does not consistently identify the spoken variety. In this game, “Mandarin Chinese” labels the intended Chinese answer among the choices. Think of each round as a small recognition puzzle, rather than proof that a script belongs to only one language.

Make it a friends-and-family challenge
Pick Explorer for a welcoming first round, or try Expert for longer phrases and more similar answer choices. Each correct answer earns 100 points. Use a hint and a correct answer earns 50 points. There are no speed bonuses, so everyone can play at their own pace.
In Family face-off, Player 1 locks in an answer before passing the phone. Player 2 answers the same question before the language is revealed. Play as individuals or as two teams. Ties count as ties: agree on a fresh round for a rematch.
Daily five gives everyone five Expert questions, changing at midnight in Tampa (US Eastern time). Share its challenge link to compare the exact same round even after the day changes.

Frequently asked questions
Is this guess the language quiz free?
Yes. You can play, see every answer, and share a challenge without creating an account or entering an email address.
Do I have to know other languages to play?
No. Explorer uses greetings and a mix of language choices. You can often recognize a writing system or a familiar word. Expert uses longer phrases and more similar answer choices.
Is this a guess the language by sound quiz?
The scored game uses written phrases, so it works with your sound off. After an answer, you may be able to hear a computer-generated pronunciation if your device has a voice for that language. Those optional voices vary by device and are not native-speaker recordings.
How many questions and languages are included?
Quick play and Family face-off have 10 questions. Daily five has five. The question bank contains 48 phrases across 24 languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Greek, Russian, Hindi, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Romanian, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, and Swahili. Each round draws distinct languages.
Can friends play exactly the same questions?
Yes. Use Share challenge or Copy challenge after finishing. The link preserves the question set, difficulty, and answer order. It does not contain the answers or your name. It opens as a solo challenge so friends can compare results.
Does a high score mean I’m fluent?
No. Recognizing a phrase or script is different from speaking, understanding conversations, reading, or writing a language. Your result is a game score, not a placement test or a certificate.
Are my scores saved?
When browser storage is available, this tool saves your best solo scores on this device. It does not ask for your name or email and has no public leaderboard. Your website’s usual privacy and analytics settings still apply.
