Understanding IELTS Scoring

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses English proficiency on a scale of 1-9, with 9 being expert level. Your overall band score is calculated by averaging your scores across all four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) and rounding to the nearest whole or half band.

Scoring Calculation

  • Listening and Reading are graded using raw scores (out of 40), which are converted to band scores (1-9).
  • Writing and Speaking are directly assessed using the 9-band scale by certified examiners.
  • The overall band score is calculated by averaging all four components and rounding to the nearest 0.5 or whole band.
  • Example: (6.5 + 7 + 5.5 + 6) ÷ 4 = 6.25, which rounds to an overall band of 6.5.

Academic vs. General Training

While the Listening and Speaking sections are the same for both test versions, the Reading and Writing components differ:

  • Academic Reading features texts from books, journals, and newspapers.
  • General Training Reading includes texts encountered in everyday situations.
  • The raw score to band score conversion differs between Academic and General Training, particularly for the Reading section.
