Understanding Your TOEFL iBT Score

The TOEFL iBT was significantly updated in late 2023 (known as the "Enhanced TOEFL"). Our calculator above uses the most current scoring logic. Whether you are applying to universities in the USA or obtaining professional licensure, understanding how your raw score converts to the scaled score (0–30) is crucial for your preparation.

How the "Enhanced" TOEFL is Scored

The total TOEFL score ranges from 0 to 120. This total is the sum of four section scores, each scaled from 0 to 30.

  • Reading (0–30): Reduced to just 2 reading passages with 20 questions total.
  • Listening (0–30): Consists of 28 questions based on lectures and conversations.
  • Speaking (0–30): Scored by human raters and AI on a 0–4 rubric, then converted.
  • Writing (0–30): Includes the new "Writing for an Academic Discussion" task. Scored on a 0–5 rubric.

What is a "Raw Score" vs. "Scaled Score"?

Your Raw Score is the actual number of points you earn (e.g., getting 15 questions correct). However, ETS (the test maker) converts this into a Scaled Score(0–30) to account for slight variations in difficulty between different test versions. This ensures that a score of 25 on one date represents the same English proficiency as a 25 on another date.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How is the new TOEFL Writing section scored?

The Writing section now includes two tasks: the Integrated Writing Task and the new Writing for an Academic Discussion task. Responses are rated by human graders and AI scoring engines on a scale of 0 to 5. The average of these two tasks is converted to the final 0–30 scaled score.

What is a good TOEFL score?

A "good" score depends entirely on your goal. However, here are general benchmarks:

  • 80–90: Generally accepted by most undergraduate programs in the US.
  • 90–100: Often required for graduate programs and competitive universities.
  • 100+: Required for Ivy League schools and top-tier institutions (e.g., Harvard, MIT) or specific professional licensing.

Does the TOEFL penalty for wrong answers exist?

No. There is no penalty for guessing on the TOEFL. You do not lose points for incorrect answers; you simply do not gain a point. It is always better to guess than to leave a question blank.

What are "MyBest® Scores"?

MyBest® Scores (also known as superscores) combine your highest section scores from all TOEFL tests taken within the last two years. While many universities accept MyBest scores, some still require a single-sitting score. Always check with your specific institution.
